DOTTERS! … A Simple Secret Weapon

There’s a new coloring sheet on the block and its name is DAB THE DOTS!

Dot sheets have become a staple in my weekly lesson plans due to its high engagement level with all age groups!

As a planner, I enjoy incorporating a lot of multi-step cutesy crafts that incorporate cutting, gluing, painting, tearing, smearing, and collage-making, but as the TEACHER, I appreciate the balance of having simple single-paper take-home sheets, such as coloring and tracing, that the learners can complete more independently. Teachers need a balance of complex creative art work, and simple single paper activities where the children are able to work freely & independently. These simple sheets provide extra time for learning via hands-on experiments and teacher-led group activities. They also provide a break-space for all learners during difficult transition times or individual learners who may be disengaged within groups or needing an opportunity for redirection. Teachers need balance of simple and complex art activities just like learners need balance of loud and quiet activities.

I personally don’t have an issue with coloring sheets, I see them as classic children’s activities. But I also notice coloring sheets have gained a negative reputation with many within childcare settings, possibly due to overuse by providers. Have you noticed?

Either way, Dot sheets are a great tool to use in place of or alongside coloring sheets!

I’ve noticed in my experience that learners always get super focused and creative with the dotters and how they color mix. Having to-the-point activities that the learner knows exactly how to complete makes them confident in their ability, therefore leaving them with more capacity to focus on their creativity instead of their ability!

Plus! swapping colors with friends adds a little sprinkle of sharing into the mix *gasps*! Engagement, Gripping, Sharing, Fine Motor Exercise = A successful lesson in creativity & teamwork!
